To those who are familiar with the God’s Own Country, Kerala’s treasures can be a treat for the sore eyes. Lush greenery, quaint canals and lagoons along with the inner connect with nature, one loves heading here when they look forward to escaping the madness of the urban life. The picturesque line up of the water bodies starts from Kochi to Kollam. However, the most popular spot along the backwaters is Allepey. Therefore it’s no wonder Alleppey has become synonymous with Kerala backwaters.

Many flock to stay at the Alleppey beach resorts to get the best of both worlds with a pristine beach and tranquil backwaters only a little further ahead. Wounding through the magnanimous Vembanad lake, the backwaters are popularly used by the locals for irrigation, transportation and fishing purposes. Come in the right season and you will witness the grand snake boat races that attracts thousands of people from across the state along with tourists. and is a star-studded affair.

How to reach

Kerala has a well-connected internal railway system that touches all the popular cities and towns. So whether you land at the Kochi Airport, Calicut Airport and Thiruvananthapuram Aiport, you can easily find your way to Allepey with the local trains or the inter-state trains if you reserve well in time. Or else take a pre-paird taxi from the Kochi Airport, and bam! You’re in Alleppey within 3 hours.

How to explore

One of the most popular and commercial ways of exploring the backwaters is said to be by hiring a houseboat – another quintessential Kerala experience. Sit back in your houseboat, pop open a can or bottle of beer and snack on customized food prepared with fresh catch from the backwaters. It is one of the most relaxing experiences you will have in Kerala. Many houseboats come with a day trip or night stay trip – choose one that pleases you more.

If you’re staying at a resort nearby, say at a Marari Beach Resort, they most likely have tie-ups with various houseboats on the waterfront. Some of them might even have their oen houseboats so do not forget to enquire with your hotel to get the best deal out of your visit to Allepey.

While relaxing with your eyes closed may seem like a cool way to relax you don’t want to miss out the views of residences and hotels that line the waterways, paving way for a stunning landscape.  You can also choose to go kayaking or go for a blitzy ride in a speed boat.  But nothing like the houseboat lounging experience on the Kerala backwaters.
