Things you must do in Varanasi

Benares- just the mention of the city is capable of evoking so many emotions. Perhaps it is because the place happens to be the cradle of Indian civilisation, the holiest of the seven sacred cities, and a luminous seat of learning. While the city is primarily visited by pilgrims, and those seeking to attain salvation, a trip to Varanasi can also be more than just that. Here are a few things to do that will be worth the experience, and will make you want to visit Varanasi at least once.

·         Boat ride on the Ganges

While this may sound ordinary, it is anything but that. The scenic beauty of the Ganges during dawn or dusk is unparalleled and cannot be matched by any corner of the world. A boat ride during the Aarti would be the best time, since you can see the place decorated with lights and diyas and witness the ‘city of lights’ in all its glory. The panoramic view of the river and the ghat is something that you must experience at least once in your life.

·         Shopping at the local market

Shopping may be the last thing to come to your mind when a pilgrimage place like Varanasi is concerned. Varanasi is well known for its Weavers village and top-notch silk sarees, but the local markets also have a huge variety of things to offer, such as stone inlay work, jewellery, bangles, idols of different deities, and other clothing apparel.

·         Visit historical sites

If the rich cultural heritage and history of India excites you, then Varanasi has a lot in store for you. The Jantar Mantar observatory here hosts a unique equatorial sundial which is functional and can still allow measurements, if monitored by a person. The observatory is near the palace of Jai Singh II of Jaipur, located above the ghats.

Often seen in movies because of its majesty and architectural finesse, the Ramnagar Fort is located on the eastern bank of the river, opposite the Tulsi Ghat. Built with chunar sandstone, it exemplifies Mughal architecture. It also contains antique marvels, such as American vintage cars, a weaponry hall, a rare astrological clock, ancient manuscripts, and books illustrated in the Mughal miniature style.

·         Dining

You simply cannot resist the piping hot jalebis and kachoris, refreshing lassi and thandai and of course, the world-famous paan that comes in different flavours. From the scrumptious street food, to the Best Hotels In Varanasi that now serve all cuisines, you will not regret visiting this place because of the delectable dishes you would get to taste.

Lodging in the city wouldn’t be an issue, since the luxury hotels in Varanasi would ensure a comfortable and memorable stay.
